Artist: Michael Lau

Michael Lau (Hong Kong Chinese, b. 1970) is the anglicized name of Lau Jian-Wen (劉建文), who graduated from the First Institute of Art and Design in 1992, exhibiting his paintings in galleries before focusing on window display designs and advertising. Lau’s first publicly released sculptural work was for the cover of Anodize‘s Action Figures album (1997), which spurred the artist to more thoroughly explore the toy as art concept.

Debuting as his third solo exhibition, crazysmiles (1999) at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Lau created 101 handmade “action figure” art pieces, which he collectively called the Gardeners. Emphasizing the look of counter-cultural youth, especially skateboarders, these pieces inspired other artists in a similar direction.

Lau continues, to this day, to be dedicated to producing work within the designer toy art movement.
