Artist: Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami (Japanese, b. February 1st, 1962) is a contemporary artist known for blurring the line between high and low arts. His works typically use vibrant colors and incorporate motifs from traditional and popular Japanese culture, repackaging the content in a manner that is simultaneously cute, psychedelic, and/or satirical. His most frequent recurring motifs include smiling flowers, mushrooms, skulls, and Buddhist iconography. In 2000, he coined the term “superflat” and published the theory behind it, using the term to describe his own artistic style as well as that of those he’s influenced.
