Artist: Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b. March 22nd, 1929) has worked in a wide variety of media throughout her career, including painting, collage, soft sculpture, performance art, and environmental installations, most of which exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colors, repetition, and patterns. Relocating from her native Japan to New York City in 1957, Kusama became a fixture of the avant-garde art movement during the early 1960s, though her pieces generally could be classified as feminist, minimalist, surrealist, abstract expressionist, outsider, and/or pop art. Most major museums have exhibited Kusama’s work, ranging from single pieces/installations to entire retrospectives.
