WuzOne’s No Strings On Me

I‘ve always been fond of the Pinocchio tale, the story of maturing that it is, and WuzOne‘s No Strings On Me (2015) captures that spirit perfectly. Produced by Kidrobot using their 8″ Dunny vinyl form, this piece debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and was released worldwide a month later.

The History of the No Strings On Me Design

As part of The Truth of Pinocchio exhibition at GKO Gallery, WuzOne contributed the hand-painted True Skully (2014) on the Dunny form. This unique piece was used as the basis for No Strings On Me, both capturing the rendition of the character from Disney’s Pinocchio.

My Impressions of No Strings On Me

Kidrobot did a fantastic job not only capturing WuzOne’s clean style but also the minute details, such as the two-tonality for shading the different elements. I was curious why this piece changed titles from the original work to the production sculpture. When I asked WuzOne about this, he commented that he felt it needed a more meaningful title for his first mass release. As such, he went with No Strings On Me, which he indicated has word game within it.

Shortly after this piece was released, WuzOne was commissioned by a collector to create the Jiminy Cricket (2015) hand-painted piece. Seeing this, I do wish that Kidrobot had produced an accompanying 3″ Dunny of this design. Or, alternatively, the vinyl sculpture rendition of the cricket with the Kidrobot mascot’s head that is illustrated on the boxes inner flap.
